statement:

Since approximately 2015, my paintings have shifted from photo-based documentation of familial histories to observation-based paintings, recording views from ordinary life over extended periods. Both approaches end up being autobiographical. The creation of my drawings and paintings is rooted in a practice of attention-giving and beauty-seeking, meditations on mindfulness, mortality, and existence. Throughout the work, I am drawn to and transfixed by transitive states of light, especially shifts in perceived color. Light is the singular requirement for all life and is the source of our perceived experience. Light is the arbiter of color, form, space, and ultimately, visual memories. These paintings accrue over weeks and months, documenting what is at hand around me, physically and mentally. The inherent beauty I see in these small interactions drives my artistic practice. In the form of mark, value, and color, I record the beauty and complexity inherent in my mundane surroundings, giving testament to my conscious effort to be present in this world.

In recent years, some works have included text and combined several subjects taken from my quotidian surroundings. Text included in the paintings merges into the images, becoming partially illegible, while the images themselves merge or dissolve into washes. The text acknowledges a tension in seeking to find the ordinary sublime while my mind runs with to-do lists, death anniversaries, and replays of the past. Throughout the work, I am drawn to recording my consciousness.
